The Sicilian red oranges have a bright orange peel with variable red shades depending on the variety and the moment of harvest and sweet taste. These oranges have obtained the PGI indication and its production regulation is regulated by the Ministry of Agriculture Policies - GURI n. 240 of 14 October 1997 which determined the Registration in the "Register of protected designations of origin and protected geographical indications" pursuant to EC Reg. No. 1107/96. The pigmented fruits are part of the protected geographical indication "Arancia rossa di Sicilia". The IGP Protected Geographical Indication is a quality mark and those who produce PGI must therefore adhere to strict rules of the production disciplinary, and compliance with these rules is guaranteed by the control body. The Sicilian red oranges are cultivated in numerous centers in the provinces of Catania, Enna and Syracuse. There are several varieties of red oranges, including the Common Tarot, Tarot Galice, Tarot Gallo, Tarocco Messina, Tarocco dal Muso, Tarocco Nucellare, Tarocco Catania, Tarocco Scirè, Tarocco red. Or the Mori Comune variety, Moro Nucellare and the variety Sanguinello Comune, Sanguinello Moscato, Sanguinello Moscato Nucellare, Sanguinello Moscato Cuscunà. The ones that are cultivated the most are the tarot, if they produce 60% of the annual production in Sicily. The Red Orange of Sicily is cultivated in the municipalities of eastern Sicily suitable for cultivation. The fruits of "Arancia rossa di Sicilia" must respond to specific characteristics typical of the variety to which they belong. The color must be orange with colored parts in more or less intense garnet red; the varieties have the shape of a globe or an ovoid and the color of the pulp is orange with more or less intense red streaks in relation to the time of harvest; the amount of juice that is given by a red orange PGI must be at least 40% of its weight.
Nutritional and beneficial properties of Sicilian red orange PGI The Sicilian red orange PGI is a fruit composed of about 87% water. They contain little fat and protein, and many minerals like calcium, iron, phosphorus, potassium and selenium. It is also rich in vitamins: vitamin C, A, B1 B2. The citric acid they contain plays an important role in our body: it is able to lower the acidity of the urine and thus prevent the formation of kidney stones. The red oranges are rich in polyphenols and anthocyanins - the latter are the natural pigments that give oranges the color red - which are excellent antioxidants able to fight free radicals (responsible for aging) and are fundamental in the prevention of tumors. Thanks to their properties these citrus fruits also prevent diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, diabetes, headache, bronchitis, rheumatism and many others. For example, not everyone knows that gargle with red orange juice helps treat gingivitis and stomatitis. In short, the Sicilian red orange PGI is a real natural supplement.
